Your e-marketing strategies for getting traffic to websites should include as varied a mix as possible. In driving web traffic, as in many things in life, putting ‘all your eggs in one basket’ can leave you in a precarious position. Yet many online marketing plans do just that – less-savvy marketers and a great many offline businesses spend the bulk of their traffic generation time and their online marketing budget focused strictly on SEO, or Search Engine Marketing.

But while it’s obvious to more experienced online marketers that SEO should only be one aspect of your efforts to build web traffic to websites, is SEO even the BEST method of promoting the site you’re trying to drive traffic to?

For example, let’s compare article marketing to on-going SEO activities. (On-site SEO is done when the site is built, and it’s only natural to consider the best SEO practices at that point as it takes no additional time. What we’re discussing here is the ongoing time spent on SEO after the website is complete and you’re trying to increase your visibility on the Search Engine Ranking Pages, or SERPs.)

Effective ongoing SEO activities require online marketers to be true specialists. This is because, in effect, SEO companies are engaged in what is almost guerrilla warfare against the search engines. The search engines want to list sites based on their content, their originality and whether the site is truly helpful to search engine users who are searching for information that’s relevant to them. Effective SEO requires search engine marketers to try and manipulate those results in favor of their clients or their own websites and blogs.

This has led to search engines not disclosing their ranking algorithms, and to changing those algorithms regularly as they find SEO efforts affecting their results or they come up with better ways to evaluate each page. For example, one of the methods used to evaluate a page is the number of sites linking to that page, the assumption being that the best content gets linked to the most. Online marketing programmers then created automated reciprocal linking sites called Free-For-All links pages, which flourished just long enough for the engines to catch on, at which point they dropped the rankings of the sites using them. Software was developed that spawned hundreds of sites almost instantly, all linking back to one site. Again, once the search engines had the ‘footprint’ of sites built that way, they dropped those using them. As an additional step, at least one large search engine also starting rating links lower if they come from within the same ‘sub-net mask’ (basically, the same server or servers located in the same vicinity since they may well be owned by the same website owners.)

And so the battle continues, with SEO firms trying to get more website traffic to their clients and the search engines trying to send their website traffic to the most deserving sites based on original, helpful content.

By comparison, top article directories work to help the search engines to achieve those goals. At EzineArticles, the biggest of the online article repositories, it’s now mandatory that articles submitted be unique, hither-to unpublished, properly written and not on subjects most commonly used for spam. Further, in an ongoing attempt to ensure that each article is helpful to its target market, submissions must be 400 words or longer – anything less and there’s usually not enough content to properly discuss a topic.

That being the case, the links from the bottom of the articles are completely legit, as article marketers write their content to attract readers targeted to the niche of the sites they link to. For the article writer that’s important because it means the website traffic generated is much more likely to be interested in the products or services their sites provide, and it’s of value to the readers as its a way to get more information or help in a topic that’s of interest to them.

As you can see, already article marketing is ahead of SEO vis-a-vis attracting web traffic to websites – each provides backlinks to the target website for the search engines to spider, but popular article directories also have their own audience that can be targeted through article submissions. But it doesn’t end there…

As an author builds up a collection of article submissions in the article directory, their target market starts to recognize them as an expert in the niche they cover when writing articles. That name recognition and added credibility is known as ‘branding’, and once again it leads not only to more web traffic to websites promoted by the article marketer, but often to higher conversion rates on the target sites due to being perceived as an expert in that field.

And as if that weren’t enough incentive to spend your time writing articles and submitting them instead of just doing SEO marketing, published EzineArticles authors have one additional benefit – their RSS feed. Now you can add the power of the WordPress blogging platform into your article marketing mix in a whole new way… Not by simply adding your articles to your own blog – I’m assuming you’re already professional enough to be doing that – but by hosting your own easy-to-use article directory! We set one up recently using the WP platform as our CMS – take a look at our Articles and Content Article Directory (and even bookmark it to submit your articles). And since you approve the articles in the same format as you post to your blog, you have the opportunity to ensure each page is search engine optimized – and the various SEO plugins for blogs work just as well in your directory too. Not to mention every page, whether your content or another marketer’s, has YOUR ads, YOUR AdSense, etc, on it along with the author’s links.

And while most authors will just submit articles and leave, smarter pros will also promote their articles there, especially if you use plugins to make the social bookmarking easy for them. Looking back at our article directory you’ll see buttons for sharing each article on FaceBook and Twitter at the top of each article, and one for Google Buzz at the end of the article. There are also buttons at the bottom to bookmark the page on Squidoo, LinkedIn, Yahoo, Technorati, StumbleUpon and other services. Affiliate marketing success depends on driving enough targeted traffic to merchants’ sites through your affiliate marketing links. There are a number of ways to achieve this goal, and the more ways you can master the greater your chances for success in your own affiliate marketing business. One of the most successful ways to accomplish this is through article marketing.

For those just getting started, understand that this doesn’t refer to marketing articles online, but rather to using articles as part of your marketing mix. Since most people come online looking for information, providing that information through articles you’ve authored is a great way to get their attention – and done right can lead them to take the desired action by clicking through to the affiliate offers you’re promoting.

This is a two-step process; first you have to provide good, solid content that fills their needs, and then you have to distribute the articles in such a way as to be sure they can find your articles in the first place. It’s also important to note that a myriad of affiliate marketing techniques, strategies and tricks have come and gone since the web was established in 1994, but providing good, solid content through article marketing has always been and will continue to be one of the darlings of the search engines – after all, their sole purpose is to make it easy for people to find the information they need, and you’re providing that information in your articles. There is no argument that article marketing is the most effective type of marketing that you can do to build traffic to your websites, but many of those who want to market with articles don’t know how many articles they need for the efforts to be rewarded.

Many will write and distribute one or two articles, thinking that is enough. In some cases, it may be enough, but it isn’t really enough to build credibility – and by limiting yourself in such a way, you are literally leaving money on the table.

Instead, you need to have an article marketing regimen. You should schedule writing and submission into your schedule on a weekly basis if possible, and on a monthly basis at the very least.

If you do the work yourself, it takes anywhere from a few minutes to an hour to write the article, and it can take about one eight hour day to get it submitted to all of the repositories. If you outsource the work, it takes five minutes of your time to contact your ghost writer, and another five minutes to contact your submission service.

Articles can become very viral, spreading far and wide. building backlinks to your websites and garnering direct traffic through clicks on the links in your Author’s Resource Box. This benefits you and your business, and it stands to reason that the more articles you can produce and submit, the more viral it all becomes. Each and every article that you put out there will be constantly working for you, helping you build website traffic!

Of all the various ways to boost your blog’s or website’s ranking in the search engine results pages (SERPs), one-way backlinks are amongst the most important and most valuable SEO techniques to use. There are three common techniques for generating backlinks to your sites and blogs, and each has it’s own place in your traffic generation strategy.

Hiring An SEO Firm To Get You Backlinks:

The first is paying an SEO company to get them for you – this can be hit and miss based on which companies you use, but in time you can find and stick with a good one.

Benefits: Doesn’t take up much of your time – you’re on to other projects while they get you your links. Drawbacks: Can be very expensive to get links from good PR sites, and paid ads on sites with high Page Rank are overly expensive for most marketers.

Article Marketing To Get You BackLinks:

Second is article marketing – the reliable old way to get your name out there, establish your credibility and generate a lot of one-way backlinks to your sites. There are hundreds, if not thousands of article directories out there just waiting for your articles, and you can build a ton of backlinks over time both from your articles being at the directories, and from people using your articles on their sites and blogs.

Benefits: Unlimited number of links can be generated, both by writing and submitting more articles and by submitting your articles to more directories. It also gives you a chance to prove yourself an expert in your field, and build a reputation amongst the other marketers in your niche. And it’s free if you do the work yourself. Disadvantages: Not everyone is a good writer, has the time to research & write article content, or can think up enough topics to keep a steady stream of new articles rolling out. Outsourcing your article submissions saves a lot of time but is expensive, while submitting articles yourself takes a lot of time if you want wide exposure.

Blog Commenting To Generate One-Way Backlinks:

The newest of the three common ways to get one-way backlinks is by commenting on blogs within your niche. Not just any blogs, though – WordPress uses a ‘no-follow’ tag by default, and most bloggers just leave it that way. Specifically you want to concentrate on blogs that have both the ‘Do-Follow’ and ‘CommentLuv’ plugins installed, as we do here at the Top Traffic Tips Blog. The Do-Follow tag tells search engines to follow your backlink and spider your blog or website, while CommentLuv fetches the last blog post you put online and links to it using your post’s title, thus ensuring your keywords are in the linking text – you ARE using keywords in every heading, right?

Benefits: My own experience using all 3 methods have shown blog commenting to be the most effective way to get one-way backlinks quickly to a new site, blog or affiliate link. While they don’t go viral like your articles do, the time involvement is much less. You simply take your list of appropriate blogs in your niche, and comment on 3-5 of them a day. This keeps the backlinks coming in over time, the way the search engines prefer, and gets links to your various posts according to what your last post was when you make your comment. External one-way backlinks to a lot of different pages in your blog or on your site is truly powerful – more powerful than all of them pointing just to your home page. And, like article marketing, intelligent commenting helps to build your rep as an expert in your field, and leads to more people cliocking through to your link.

Disadvantages: None, really, except the time it takes to locate the proper blogs in the first place, and that’s been solved for you now, with the release of a new directory of appropriate blogs to gain one-way backlinks from – you can download the report with both PDF and CSV copies of over 4,000 blogs to get one-way backlinks from by commenting there, ranging from PR0 to PR7. Start with the list, and find the one’s best suited to your target market, then work your way through, again 3-5 blogs per day.

Second, do not – I repeat, DO NOT use auto-commenting software for this – be professional and visit the blogs yourself, leaving intelligent comments relating directly to the blog post you’re commenting on. First, almost every blog using the Do-Follow tag is moderated, so your comments won’t get through anyway. And after you’ve hit them a half-dozen times with spam comments, no matter how complimentary you are, they’ll simple add your IP address to the banned list to avoid having to delete your posts, and will report the comments as spam.

Give it a couple of moments, then make sure it’s also showing up in your MyBlogLog listings – Technorati and MyBlogLog are the two most important Web 2.0 sites to any Internet marketer, niche marketer or affiliate marketer in terms of promoting their blog posts.

Here’s where the power of Private Label Rights, or PLR, comes into your Web 2.0 targeted traffic generation strategies… Take a look through the e-book and see if you can find a good passage of about 600-800 words that either sums up the contents of the e-book or gives some great tips without revealing the most powerful tips in the PLR package. Copy & paste that part into a notepad file and edit it as necessary to make it into a powerful Squidoo lens. Write a summary or ‘signature box’ to put at the end of it, pointing out that it’s an exerpt from your book, and recommend they download the full version for more info – and be sure to link to your salespage. Add the lens to Squidoo and as soon as it’s published, bookmark it at all the popular Web 2.0 bookmarking sites using the OnlyWire site.

Next pick 3 or 4 good tips from the e-book, and copy & paste 300-400 word passages about each of those tips into separate notepad files. Touch up anything that doesn’t flow til you have four good articles, add an ‘About the Author’ box that’s similar to the one on your Squidoo lens, and submit all 4 articles to the ten or twelve top article directories online. This is the fastest way to get a number of high-quality one-way backlinks to your new site, getting it quickly spidered in Google, Yahoo!, Live Search, SearchMe, etc.

Really want to maximize your targeted traffic from the Web 2.0 sites? Go back now to the PLR Audio, listen to it right through a couple of times, making note of any 3-5 minute passages that seem particularly crammed with great information. Once you’ve picked a couple, use your audio editing program of choice to copy and paste the two or three best passages into their own audio files. Record a quick intro pointing out that the info is exerpted from your audio e-book, and a quick exit for the audios recommending people download the entire audio from your site – be sure to both say and spell out your salespage URL! Now go back to the e-book and do the same with those exact same passages, creating a transcript for each of your new audio files.

Over the course of the next few days, add one of the transcripts to your blog as a new post, embed the audio in a player with the post, and ping the usual blog directories AND the podcast directories – after all, your new audio files ARE podcasts as soon as you add them to your blog! This is an easy process if you use a podcast plugin like PodPress – and it will let you upload your podcast to the massive iTunes directory as well! Since every audio file has your URL listed at the end of the podcast, each listener at ANY source is now part of your potential traffic. And since they were interested enough to listen to the podcast, you know they’re TARGETED traffic as well!

That looks after using your new PLR for targeted web 2.0 traffic generation – assuming you remeber to grab your copy from www.PLRForSale.com before all 100 copies are gone. If you’re too late, either write and record your own product to use this way, or watch for other PLR sales that include both PLR e-books and PLR audio e-books.

Writing Articles to Build Your Targeted Traffic

Targeted traffic is the lifeblood of any Internet marketing, niche marketing or other online business. There are many ways to build your targeted traffic, and article writing is one of the easiest and most effective ways. It is also free….now THERE is a word most Internet marketers just love! FREE! Free advertising…. Free targeted traffic…. and both of them can be accomplished at the same time and by using only the knowledge that you already have about your niche topic and your computer.

The Internet isn’t called the ‘Information Super Highway’ for nothing. It’s called that because it is the place that most of the civilized world uses to get the information they need to help them look better, feel better, have more fun, get vital information, or just learn the ‘stuff’ they want to know. The Internet gobbles up information like a pig at a trough. Website owners and ezine publishers scramble for information to fill their web pages and their publications on every topic under the sun. This is where using article writing to build your targeted traffic comes in.

Write articles that are between 300 and 800 words long and that are key-word rich about whatever the topic of your website is. At the bottom of the article, include a resource box that includes your name and copyright information and a link to your website. Other website owners and ezine publishers will reprint your article and publish it to their websites or lists. Presto! You have gotten free advertising and the possibility of having every person who reads the article click on the link to your website – and it’s all targeted traffic, because they’ve read your article and want more information on that same subject – or they wouldn’t have clicked through!

Writing articles and submitting them to article directories is one of the easiest ways of building your targeted traffic and it is absolutely free! Another nice benefit is that the directories themselves are spidered by the major search engines, sometimes several times a day. Your link in your article on the directory site provides a conduit leading the search engines to your site more quickly, thus getting your site into the search engines that much quicker. And the sooner the engines are sending you more targeted traffic, the more sales you’re getting from that free targeted traffic.

And don’t forget to use those articles, or an altered version of them, on your blogs too! Article marketing and blogging are the two fastest ways to build long-term targeted traffic, and when tied in with social bookmarking at sites like Technorati & Digg, you can drive an amazing amount of targeted traffic for free – and that’s our favorite price!
