Blogs are popular ways to create an online presence for personal and business reasons. You can build a blog for free and begin posting content right away. But, what good is that content if no one is reading it. Here are ten ideas to bring in the traffic your blog needs to survive.

Of all the successful blogs on the Internet, hundreds more have failed. Running a blog is like running a business website. Unless you are willing to put the time in and treat it seriously, you won’t be blogging long.

That is not to say that the failed bloggers weren’t serious about blogging. Mostly, new bloggers aren’t prepared for the work that goes into creating a successful blog. Just building the blog doesn’t mean that people will necessary come to you. You pursue the audience and give them a reason to see what you have to say.

1. Fresh Content – no one wants to visit a blog day after day and see the same posts. Update your blog content at least twice a week. This will be easier if you write several posts ahead of time and upload them at the appropriate times.

2. Article Marketing – the niche you’ve chosen for your blog is one that interests you. If it is interesting you will spend more time doing it. Create content not only for your blog but also to be submitted to article directories. Use the resource box to advertise your blog so people can find you.

3. Social Networking – these sites are everywhere. Join Facebook, MySpace, Squidoo, Twitter or a dozen others and make connections. You can join groups of likeminded people who are also bloggers or entrepreneurs.

4. Viral Marketing – this is where you spread the word about your blog. Talk to friends, family and even strangers. Give out business cards that have your blog address on them.

5. Use RSS Feeds – RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication.” Readers can subscribe to your feed and get email updates when new content is posted. It is an easy way for them to keep up with your blog without spending all day online.

6. Submit Blog to Search Engines – doing this allows your blog to be ranked. Google, Yahoo! and Bing are the most popular search engines you want to crawl your blog pages. It doesn’t guarantee top ranking, though. You’ll have to do a little more work for that.

7. Joining Forums – as a blogger you are a budding entrepreneur. Right now you are marketing yourself to find traffic and then profit. Become a member of business forums, work at home forums and others to meet new people and share ideas. You can add a link to your blog in the signature line so others can find you.

8. Visit other blogs – show your appreciation to those who visit you by also posting comments on their blogs. It is a kindness that shows others you are not just out to advertise your blog alone. Your name links to your blog home page in most cases, and those using the CommentLuv plugin also link to your latest post.

9. SEO Marketing – whatever you write, use relevant keywords. Keyword density between three and ten percent is good for getting higher page rankings in search engines. Base your keywords on a research you do to find the most popular words used in search engines for your niche.

10. Social Bookmarking – submitting posts to social bookmarking sites allows others who are members of those sites to track you back to your blog.

Using any of these ideas will start the traffic moving in your direction. It takes time but you will build the readership you want. Getting more traffic to blogs is an empirical endeavor – blog traffic builds over time as more and more links to your blogs are found by the search engines and targeted surfers alike.

Ten Top Web 2.0 Sites For Generating Free Blog Traffic!

There’s no doubt about it – you can’t be truly successful online these days without your own blog, or blogs. While websites are still viable, blogs are much more quickly indexed by the search engines, have a greater number of places to be found in, benefit from interaction with your blog readers, etc, etc.

But of and by itself, a blog isn’t necessarily successful. As with any virtual real estate, you have to get targeted traffic to it – that is, you must attract an audience of people who want to know the information you’re sharing, and who want to buy the resources you’re promoting.

Fortunately, there are a number of new Web 2.0 technologies in use at various Web 2.0 sites to make that easier these days. Armed with a bit of knowledge, you can flood your blogs with traffic at little or no cost!

Here are our Top 10 Web 2.0 sites for driving blog traffic:

StumbleUpon: StumbleUpon is a sort of hybrid site – it has all the value of a search engine, and many use it that way. But it also has a random site feature – users can hit the link in the StumbleUpon toolbar and be shown sites they may not know about, sites that match the keywords set by that individual surfer. Personally, I’ve had as many as 550 visitors in one day to a blog post I had told StumbleUpon about. Ranked by any SU user who visits the page, results vary but can add up fast! Technorati: Think of Technorati as a great big search engine for blog content, organized by tags instead of ‘keywords’. MyBlogLog: In some ways MyBLogLog is similar to the other sites, but in some ways it’s vastly different! Yes, it lists your blogs, and automatically displays your last few posts. But then it goes so much further! It tracks not only your posts, but displays the comments you leave on other blogs too. Visitors to your site can choose to follow you through a widget on your blog, and you can message those following you at any time. Unlike other services, though, those direct messages not only go on their website, but get e-mailed to your followers as well. Use it sparingly for this, so you don’t get disabled for spamming.

For about $25 a year you can upgrade to pro there, and then access great stats for your blog – how many people visited each day, where your traffic came from, what pages they visited, and what links they followed to leave the site. LinkedIn: LinkedIn is a professional networking site where you complete your profile and then connect with others you know or know of. While not specifically designed to drive traffic, you do have live links to your blog from your public profile there, and a small area to update what you’re currently working on, recommending, etc. Also, your connections there can see a synopsis of your most recent blog posts, bringing more traffic in through there as well. iTunes: Yes, this is the same iTunes your kids get their music from – maybe even you yourself load your iPhone apps from the site. If so, you probably know they have a major podcast directory there, so if you’re using audios on your blog (podcasting) you can have them appear there for the 4 million+ users of iTunes to find should they search for your subject. Squidoo: Squidoo is an information site built by the online community, who create pages called ‘lenses’. You can create one on any topic you like, and add articles, photos, links, etc. By building a strong, informative lens on a related topic that links to your blogs, you can drive a lot of traffic that keeps building over time as you update and add to your lens – and again, you can have your most recent blog posts linked to from your lens automatically. HubPages: Similar to Squidoo, HubPages also let’s you create our own pages – but they prefer you do more linking to a variety of sites and become a true ‘hub’ for whatever topic you’re covering. Our PLR Hub at HubPages.

Google Knol: My favorite of these types of sites is the Google Knol – Google defines a Knol as ‘a unit of knowledge’. Readers can comment on your knol, review your knol, etc, so it becomes a community unto itself in some ways. Recently we were awarded a ‘Top Pick Knol Award’ for our Internet Marketing Knol.

FaceBook: One of the biggest and best known Web 2.0 site, the FaceBook community is huge and can bring a lot of curious people to your blog once you start interacting and building a community there. Twitter: And speaking of TweetDeck, it’s a free tool you should be using for marketing on Twitter. Twitter is my favorite Web 2.0 site these days, a micro-blogging platform that lets you post ‘tweets’ – notes, comments and/or links of up to 140 Characters per posting. I’ve left Twitter til the end of this list because I want you to sign on to follow Teri and I there, and watch what we do and how we do it. There’s so much more you can do to drive Web 2.0 traffic to your blog, but time will always be your limiting factor. For now, concentrate on those above, and after every blog post be sure to ping the directories – use iPings after one post, then Pingoat after the next one, and Ping-O-Matic after the third posting, then repeat that sequence with each set of posts you do.

All 3 are free to use, so bookmark those three pages and hit the next one in the sequence after each post. Each does some the others don’t, with overlap on the bigger sites, so don’t use more than one for each post, but don’t skip any in the rotation either.

Of all the various ways to boost your blog’s or website’s ranking in the search engine results pages (SERPs), one-way backlinks are amongst the most important and most valuable SEO techniques to use. There are three common techniques for generating backlinks to your sites and blogs, and each has it’s own place in your traffic generation strategy.

Hiring An SEO Firm To Get You Backlinks:

The first is paying an SEO company to get them for you – this can be hit and miss based on which companies you use, but in time you can find and stick with a good one.

Benefits: Doesn’t take up much of your time – you’re on to other projects while they get you your links. Drawbacks: Can be very expensive to get links from good PR sites, and paid ads on sites with high Page Rank are overly expensive for most marketers.

Article Marketing To Get You BackLinks:

Second is article marketing – the reliable old way to get your name out there, establish your credibility and generate a lot of one-way backlinks to your sites. There are hundreds, if not thousands of article directories out there just waiting for your articles, and you can build a ton of backlinks over time both from your articles being at the directories, and from people using your articles on their sites and blogs.

Benefits: Unlimited number of links can be generated, both by writing and submitting more articles and by submitting your articles to more directories. It also gives you a chance to prove yourself an expert in your field, and build a reputation amongst the other marketers in your niche. And it’s free if you do the work yourself. Disadvantages: Not everyone is a good writer, has the time to research & write article content, or can think up enough topics to keep a steady stream of new articles rolling out. Outsourcing your article submissions saves a lot of time but is expensive, while submitting articles yourself takes a lot of time if you want wide exposure.

Blog Commenting To Generate One-Way Backlinks:

The newest of the three common ways to get one-way backlinks is by commenting on blogs within your niche. Not just any blogs, though – WordPress uses a ‘no-follow’ tag by default, and most bloggers just leave it that way. Specifically you want to concentrate on blogs that have both the ‘Do-Follow’ and ‘CommentLuv’ plugins installed, as we do here at the Top Traffic Tips Blog. The Do-Follow tag tells search engines to follow your backlink and spider your blog or website, while CommentLuv fetches the last blog post you put online and links to it using your post’s title, thus ensuring your keywords are in the linking text – you ARE using keywords in every heading, right?

Benefits: My own experience using all 3 methods have shown blog commenting to be the most effective way to get one-way backlinks quickly to a new site, blog or affiliate link. While they don’t go viral like your articles do, the time involvement is much less. You simply take your list of appropriate blogs in your niche, and comment on 3-5 of them a day. This keeps the backlinks coming in over time, the way the search engines prefer, and gets links to your various posts according to what your last post was when you make your comment. External one-way backlinks to a lot of different pages in your blog or on your site is truly powerful – more powerful than all of them pointing just to your home page. And, like article marketing, intelligent commenting helps to build your rep as an expert in your field, and leads to more people cliocking through to your link.

Disadvantages: None, really, except the time it takes to locate the proper blogs in the first place, and that’s been solved for you now, with the release of a new directory of appropriate blogs to gain one-way backlinks from – you can download the report with both PDF and CSV copies of over 4,000 blogs to get one-way backlinks from by commenting there, ranging from PR0 to PR7. Start with the list, and find the one’s best suited to your target market, then work your way through, again 3-5 blogs per day.

Two Caveats about your backlink-building campaign – first, don’t ignore article marketing – keep it in your mix because of the long-term viral effect it has in building backlinks to your site. For every four or five days you spend on blog commenting, spend one on article marketing. Just be sure you start with the blog commenting, since it can generate traffic the fastest and points to different pages within your blog or site.

Second, do not – I repeat, DO NOT use auto-commenting software for this – be professional and visit the blogs yourself, leaving intelligent comments relating directly to the blog post you’re commenting on. First, almost every blog using the Do-Follow tag is moderated, so your comments won’t get through anyway. And after you’ve hit them a half-dozen times with spam comments, no matter how complimentary you are, they’ll simple add your IP address to the banned list to avoid having to delete your posts, and will report the comments as spam.

Using PLR for Web 2.0 Targeted Traffic Generation

Once in a while a great PLR package comes available, like the one that Aurelius Tjin released this morning at www.PLRForSale.com. This package is a perfect example of Private Label Rights packages that can be used to generate targeted traffic from Web 2.0 sites without much effort, and still be used to make money online – and lots of it!

Here’s where the power of Private Label Rights, or PLR, comes into your Web 2.0 targeted traffic generation strategies… Take a look through the e-book and see if you can find a good passage of about 600-800 words that either sums up the contents of the e-book or gives some great tips without revealing the most powerful tips in the PLR package. Copy & paste that part into a notepad file and edit it as necessary to make it into a powerful Squidoo lens. Write a summary or ‘signature box’ to put at the end of it, pointing out that it’s an exerpt from your book, and recommend they download the full version for more info – and be sure to link to your salespage. Add the lens to Squidoo and as soon as it’s published, bookmark it at all the popular Web 2.0 bookmarking sites using the OnlyWire site.

Next pick 3 or 4 good tips from the e-book, and copy & paste 300-400 word passages about each of those tips into separate notepad files. Touch up anything that doesn’t flow til you have four good articles, add an ‘About the Author’ box that’s similar to the one on your Squidoo lens, and submit all 4 articles to the ten or twelve top article directories online. This is the fastest way to get a number of high-quality one-way backlinks to your new site, getting it quickly spidered in Google, Yahoo!, Live Search, SearchMe, etc.

Really want to maximize your targeted traffic from the Web 2.0 sites? Go back now to the PLR Audio, listen to it right through a couple of times, making note of any 3-5 minute passages that seem particularly crammed with great information. Once you’ve picked a couple, use your audio editing program of choice to copy and paste the two or three best passages into their own audio files. Record a quick intro pointing out that the info is exerpted from your audio e-book, and a quick exit for the audios recommending people download the entire audio from your site – be sure to both say and spell out your salespage URL! Now go back to the e-book and do the same with those exact same passages, creating a transcript for each of your new audio files.

Over the course of the next few days, add one of the transcripts to your blog as a new post, embed the audio in a player with the post, and ping the usual blog directories AND the podcast directories – after all, your new audio files ARE podcasts as soon as you add them to your blog! This is an easy process if you use a podcast plugin like PodPress – and it will let you upload your podcast to the massive iTunes directory as well! Since every audio file has your URL listed at the end of the podcast, each listener at ANY source is now part of your potential traffic. And since they were interested enough to listen to the podcast, you know they’re TARGETED traffic as well!

Timing is everything. But when it comes to generating site or blog traffic, you should always be on your toes and be a day ahead of everyone else in your industry. Never think of today or tomorrow as the starting point for building traffic, it should have been started yesterday – or last week, more likely.

To help you generate tons of targeted traffic to your sites & blogs, here are some seven surefire ways to increase your targeted traffic almost immediately:

1) Invest in good advertising on the search engines

Google’s Adwords and Yahoo’s Overture provide great advertising programs that are very effective and can deliver great targeted traffic. While some will shy away from spending money to increase their traffic, it is imperative to using advertising to boost website traffic.

2) Trade Links with other sites & Blogs

More targeted traffic is the usual result for both partners when you trade links on your sites, or add each other to your blogrolls. First you benefit directly from each other’s existing web traffic, and you also benefit by having another links to your site for the search engines to spider. And the more closely related the topics of your sites or blogs, the more targeted the traffic you receive will be.

3) Use Viral Marketing

Viral marketing allows you to spread the word about your company and product little or no outlay on your part. Simply produce or aquire a downloadable resource others will value and make it available from your site or blog. BE SURE to let the people who download it know that they can pass it along all they want – encourage them to, in fact. Every time they hand it out or have it downloaded, your links are being put in front of others who might otherwise never have known you existed. 4) Search out and use targeted keywords and tightly-targeted keyword phrases for your site’s or blog’s content

Find the keywords being searched for most in your field, and the ‘long-tail’ keyword phrases most used – then write your content with those keywords in mind. If you aren’t able to write keyword-laden content to attract targeted traffic from the major search engines, it’s wise to hire a good copywriter to do that for you. While it IS very expensive to get great copy written, the extra targeted traffic you attract should definitely make up for it before long, and leave you sitting pretty from that point forward.

5) Write & Submit Articles that draw targeted traffic to your sites & blogs

Create even more great content relative to your topic, and submit it to the article directories and any sites in your niche that accept article submissions. Putting your website or blog link in the author’s Resource box both boosts your visibility with the search engines and drives in more targeted traffic from the directories themselves. Another win-win, with you on both sides!

6) Join forums and form online communities

Forums and online communities help boost targeted traffic in tremendous ways. First, your signature file usually has links to your sites, so the more helpful and active you are there the greater number of links to your sites, and the higher the volume of targeted traffic directly from the community to – you guessed it – YOUR sites and blogs. Secondly, that’s more links on other sites for the search engines to find, giving you a better chance of being indexed, and of ranking higher in those engines that use such criteria. And if you ARE truly knowledgeable in your field and give of yourself generously in the forums, you’ll quickly brand yourself as an expert, everyone’s ‘friend in the biz’ as it were, and not only generate more traffic but increase your sales conversions as well!

7) Last, but far from least, BUILD YOUR OPT-IN LISTS!

Opt-in e-mail lists for e-courses or e-zines are A MUST for successful Internet marketing, affiliate marketing, niche marketing or power blogging – and by far the best way to drive targeted traffic back to your online properties again and again. DO NOT expect to be truly successful at boosting your targeted traffic and your online profits unless you start, maintain and constantly build your own in-house opt-in mailing lists!

Search engine optimization is the art and science of making web pages attractive to internet search engines. Some internet businesses consider search engine optimization to be the subset of search engine marketing.

In the middle of the 1990s webmasters and search engine content providers started optimizing websites. At the time all the webmasters had to do was provide a URL to a search engine and a web crawler would be sent from the search engine. The web crawler would extract link from the webpage and use the information to index the page by down loading the page and then storing it on the search engines server. Once the page was stored on the search engines server a second program, called an indexer, extracted additional information from the webpage, and determines the weight of specific words. When this was complete the page was ranked.

It didn’t take very long for people to understand the importance of being highly ranked.

In the beginning search engines used search algorithms that webmasters provided about the web pages. It didn’t take webmasters very long to start abusing the system requiring search engines to develop a more sophisticated form of search engine optimization. The search engines developed a system that considered several factors; domain name, text within the title, URL directories, term frequency, HTML tags, on page key word proximity, Alt attributes for images, on page keyword adjacency, text within NOFRAMES tags, web content development, sitemaps, and on page keyword sequence.

Google developed a new concept of evaluating internet web pages called PageRank. PageRank weighs a web page’s quantity and quality based on the pages incoming links. This method of search engine optimization was so successful that Google quickly began to enjoy successful word of mouth and consistent praise.

To help discourage abuse by webmasters, several internet search engines, such as Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Ask.com, will not disclose the algorithms they use when ranking web pages.The signals used today in search engine optimization typically are; keywords in the title, link popularity, keywords in links pointing to the page, PageRank (Google), Keywords that appear in the visible text, links from on page to the inner pages, and placing punch line at the top of the page.

For the most part registering a webpage/website on a search engine is a simple task. All Google requires is a link from a site already indexed and the web crawlers will visit the site and begin to spider its contents. Normally a few days after registering on the search engine the main search engine spiders will begin to index the website.

Some search engines will guarantee spidering and indexing for a small fee. These search engines do not guarantee specific ranking. Webmaster’s who don’t want web crawlers to index certain files and directories use a standard robots.txt file. This file is located in the root directory. Occasionally a web crawler will still crawl a page even if the webmaster has indicated he does not wish the page indexed.
